5th Annual Stop For Nikhil Run/Walk - September 20, 2015

On a glorious spring day we had more than 800 people come out to run and walk at the 5th Annual STOP For Nikhil Run/Walk on September 20. The Foundation raised approximately $55,000 which will further our efforts to promote traffic safety, and provide music lessons to talented underserved children and academic scholarships to graduating seniors in West Orange. The event is held every year to promote traffic safety and to remember and honor those who died from motor vehicle crashes or have been seriously injured.

The West Orange High School Track course was a sea of orange with over 800 people wearing safety orange T-shirts designed by a Summit High School student, Jocelyn Mendez. She won the T-Shirt design contest we ran for this year's T-shirt. The event was kicked off by Boys Scouts Troop 6 reading the pledge of allegiance followed by star spangled banner sung by Divya Anand, Junior at West Orange High School to the music performed by the trumpet and saxophone players from the Music For Nikhil group.

West Orange Mayor, Robert Parisi, introduced the keynote speaker New Jersey's Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno, an avid public safety advocate. She also signed Nikhil's Law into effect in August 2015. This year's event featured Lt. Governor Kim Guadagno, an avid public safety advocate, as our keynote speaker. "I'm proud to stand beside the Badlani family once again as we honor Nikhil's memory. First, we continue to raise awareness about driving safety, particularly the importance of stopping at stop signs. In this way, we hope that the Badlani's loss will prevent other families from enduring the same tragedy" said Lt. Governor Guadagno. "We also celebrate Nikhil's life through your efforts to help young people who share Nikhil's educational and musical dreams to follow them in his honor."

This year the Nikhil Badlani Inspiration Award was given to Jennean Hinestrosa for her determination to survive, rebuild her life and help others in need. Jennean suffered traumatic brain and spinal cord injury in a car accident in October 2010. She is quadriplegic and is determined to walk again. Jennean helps mentor her peers and inspires them with her positive attitude.

There were also several activities and educational information for the participants at the event. Safe Kids gave away 50 helmets that they custom-fitted to each kid. Numerous people signed the safety pledge and painted their thumb red in an event organized by the West Orange Police Department.

Following the run and walk, a series of fun sprint dashes for younger children were held on the football field. The event concluded with an award ceremony for top finishers in each age group for males and females. Congratulations!!
