4th Annual Stop For Nikhil Run/Walk - September 21st, 2014

We were fortunate that the rain held off, after the torrential rain the night before. It was a cloudy morning on Sunday, September 21, 2014, not too hot and not too cold, perfect weather for a good run. The West Orange High School football field was the color of blue, the color of the T-shirt for the 4th Annual STOP For Nikhil Run/Walk to promote traffic safety and to remember and honor those who died from motor vehicle crashes or were seriously injured.

Around 600 people attended the event and the Foundation raised approximately $48,000, which will further our efforts to promote traffic safety, and provide music lessons to talented underserved children and academic scholarships to graduating seniors in West Orange.

This year’s event featured Antonia Sinibaldi, a senior at the Weehawken High School. Antonia is a victim of a serious car crash at the age of 2-years old. She is paralyzed from the neck down and breathes through a ventilator. Antonia was awarded the Annual Nikhil Badlani Inspiration Award for her courage, perseverance and determination to overcome challenges. She gave a moving speech and captivated the audience with a rendition of “I Won’t Give Up” by Jason Mraz. We also had several activities and educational information for the participants at the event.

As in the years past, Marci Echeverria, was the Mistress of Ceremonies and kept the crowd engaged with her witty banter. DJ Anthony Minervino entertained the people with some cool tunes. West Orange Mayor, Robert Parisi, welcomed the people to West Orange and talked about how the Foundation is making a difference. Anay Badlani, Nikhil’s brother led the participants in reciting the "Safety Pledge to Nikhil". Nikhil’s parent’s, Sunil and Sangeeta, thanked the people for their support and shared the accomplishments of the Foundation.

Numerous high-profile organizations, focused on teen driving safety, were present at the event. Traffic Officers Association of Essex County, which provides traffic safety enforcement and education, Students Against Distracted Driving (SADD), and Drive Safer, a revolutionary program that focuses on saving lives by teaching critical car control and defensive driving skills to teens and parents.

Following the run and walk, a series of fun sprint dashes for younger children were held on the football field, as well as a toddler "Power Wheels" safe driving course. The event concluded with an award ceremony for top finishers in each age group for males and females. Congratulations!!
